PRESS RELEASE
Rio Climate Action Week launched (15/05/25)

Rio Climate Action Week encourages society to discuss and promote solutions to the climate crisis

The event will take place from August 23 to 29, across various locations in Rio de Janeiro, featuring both official and collaborative programming; activities can be registered at rioclimateactionweek.org.

Rio de Janeiro, 15 May 2025:  In 2025, when it comes to environmental issues, the world’s eyes are on Brazil. The country will host COP30 in November, right in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, in the state of Pará. However, the global climate agenda is not limited to COP: the Rio Climate Action Week (RCAW) will be held from August 23 to 29 in different venues across Rio de Janeiro. It aims to be a meeting point for discussions on climate change, covering topics such as innovation, sustainability, and equitable green economic development in Brazil. In addition to its official program, the event invites public collaboration. Those who wish to be part of this major climate festival can register their activities on the website rioclimateactionweek.org until 4 July 2025.

Organized in partnership with London Climate Action Week — the world’s most participatory climate festival — RCAW will be an open, decentralized, and collaborative event designed to foster debates and solutions to the climate crisis tailored to Brazil’s reality. The goal is to align with and support Brazil’s COP30 Presidency and build momentum for success in Belen in November. RCAW aims to bring together public and private actors, including companies, universities, startups, and institutions, in the search for innovative solutions, creating a space to monitor, discuss, and advance Brazil’s targets toward a green economy.

“The world began its sustainability journey in Brazil over 30 years ago at Rio 92. The Earth Summit gave us the Rio Conventions to protect nature and the climate. This year, the world will return to Brazil as the host country of COP30 to renew our commitment to environmental protection, our communities, and our economies, and to once again embrace multilateral cooperation. The Rio Climate Action Week will be a key milestone on the road to Belém, as we build momentum and showcase collective action,” says Malini Mehra, ambassador of London Climate Action Week (LCAW) and Co-convenor of the event in Brazil.

To Dr. Marcelo de Andrade, founder and Chairman of Pro Natura International, which serves as the Secretariat for Rio Climate Action Week, the event is an opportunity to mobilize different sectors of society. “I have dedicated my life to bridging distant worlds — from the Amazon rainforest to global decision-making centers — with a single purpose: to realize the human potential for good. Being part of the Rio Climate Action Week as co-convener, alongside the London Climate Action Week and my dear friend Malini Mehra — with whom I share over two decades of friendship and action — brings me great joy and responsibility. This Climate Action Week is not just an event; it is an invitation to Brazil and to the world to turn hope into strategy through science, collective action, and the intentional use of capital with purpose. May Rio inspire the world with its courage, its beauty, and its unwavering commitment to a sustainable future”, he said.

In addition to lectures and debates, RCAW lives up to the “action” in its name. A wide range of activities will be held to engage the public, companies, and authorities. Artists and their environmentally themed and sustainability-focused works will be featured through film screenings and exhibitions, inspiring participants to learn more about Brazilian local realities. Informal dinners and meetings with leaders will also be organized to foster immersive discussions. Tours to iconic sites in Rio will help visitors connect with the local community.

From London to Rio: A Climate Journey

The event is inspired by London Climate Action Week, represented in Brazil by ProNature International — an NGO that has been working for almost 40 years to solve economic, social, and environmental challenges worldwide. London’s pioneering climate action week has been held since 2019, and has inspired other versions in cities such as Auckland, Baku, Bangkok, Dublin, Shanghai, and Sydney. The 2024 edition in London, held in partnership with the Mayor of London, gathered around 45,000 people, including ministers, mayors, business leaders, investors, activists, artists, and the general public, across more than 200 in-person, remote, and hybrid events. The focus of these events is to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy, promote climate resilience, and inspire other cities to do the same.

About Rio Climate Action Week

Rio Climate Action Week is an independent, non-partisan initiative, in support of the Brazilian COP30 Presidency and in partnership with London Climate Action Week, to showcase and mobilise climate action at every level, with a focus on finance for delivery at scale. RCAW will bring the public, private and voluntary sectors, together with financial institutions, philanthropy and others, in a series of events across the week to set up ambition for delivery at COP30. Expect to see a range of actors engaging from – from business & industry to civil society, academia, science and technology community, arts and culture institutions, faith groups, sports bodies and others taking vital practical action to meet climate and sustainability goals. In this critical year, RCAW will work to strengthen Brazilian leadership, working across the family of climate action weeks with diverse partners, to deliver success at COP30 and beyond.
