From the State Assembly to Christ the Redeemer: Rio Climate Action Week brings climate programming to iconic city landmarks in support of COP30

Opening event at the Museum of Tomorrow will gather leading environmental voices such as Dan Ioschpe, Izabella Teixeira, Marina Grossi, Ricardo Mussa and Tatiana Rosito

Rio de Janeiro, July 23 – With just 30 days to go until the first edition of Rio Climate Action Week (RCAW), the city prepares to host a unique climate initiative. Inspired by the London Climate Action Week (LCAW) – the largest independent climate festival in the world – RCAW will take place from August 23 to 29, activating emblematic and strategic venues across Rio. The aim is to unite the public and private sectors, along with civil society, in a shared commitment to climate action and to kick off the collective momentum toward COP30.

The official opening ceremony will be hosted by the Museum of Tomorrow on August 25, and will feature prominent names such as Dan Ioschpe (High-Level Climate Champion for COP30), Izabella Teixeira (Former Minister of the Environment & Climate Change, Brazil; Member, Advisory Board, Brazilian Center of International Relations – CEBRI), Marina Grossi (President, CEBDS), Ricardo Mussa (Chair, Sustainable Business COP) and Ambassador Tatiana Rosito (Secretary for International Affairs, Brazil’s Ministry of Finance).

The agenda includes conferences, panels, workshops, film screenings, book launches, and community activities focused on the six priority themes of the COP30 Presidency. Highlighting the interconnectedness between climate issues and broader public interests, each day’s programming will be led by a dedicated content hub.

The Finance theme will be explored through partnerships with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Pro Natura International, and the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center – CCBB Rio. The Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI) will lead the Geopolitics, Climate Policy, and International Relations Hub.

The Tiradentes Palace, home to Rio de Janeiro’s State Legislative Assembly, will host the Governance Hub, in collaboration with GLOBE Legislators – a non-partisan, cross-party international organization founded by Al Gore and John Kerry, dedicated to improving governance for sustainable development.

At AquaRio, discussions will focus on Oceans and Water. The Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS) will lead the Business Day, while SEBRAE will partner on themes related to Small and Medium Enterprises. Ação da Cidadania will coordinate dialogues around Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems.

There will also be a hub dedicated to activities on Culture and Fashion. The program also features events at other iconic locations in Rio, including Christ the Redeemer, Jardim Botânico, Copacabana Beach, Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Tijuca National Park, and various city parks.

Malini Mehra, LCAW Ambassador and RCAW co-organizer, emphasized the importance of building momentum to support the Brazilian COP30 Presidency:  “We are at a pivotal moment to show the world that Brazil can lead on the climate action agenda. We had a strong presence with Brazilian partners during London Climate Action Week and are excited to see those partnerships renewed and new institutions joining us to build momentum for a successful COP30 in Belem.

Dr. Marcelo de Andrade, CEO of Pro Natura International and co-organizer of RCAW, highlighted the value of new partnerships: “Our participation in London was crucial for building bridges with people and institutions. For our first edition in Rio, we’re proud to present a robust program featuring major voices from Brazil and around the world.”

The Official Opening Conference will take place at the Museum of Tomorrow on Monday 25 August, and full event details and confirmed speakers will be announced soon on the official website: https://rioclimateactionweek.org.

About Rio Climate Action Week

Rio Climate Action Week (RCAW) is an independent, non-partisan initiative in support of the Brazilian COP30 Presidency and in partnership with London Climate Action Week. Its goal is to promote and mobilize climate action across all sectors, with a focus on finance for large-scale implementation.

RCAW will convene public, private, and voluntary sectors, alongside financial institutions, philanthropies, and other actors, in a week-long series of events designed to raise ambition ahead of COP30.

The initiative expects engagement from a wide range of stakeholders — including businesses and industries, civil society, academia, scientific and tech communities, arts and cultural institutions, faith-based groups, sports organizations, and more — all working toward practical solutions to achieve climate and sustainability goals.

In this pivotal year, RCAW aims to strengthen Brazilian leadership, while collaborating with the global climate action week network and diverse partners to help ensure the success of COP30 and beyond.
